The people of Bridgwater are invited to a film screening of Groundswell Rising, a documentary about fracking in America and the social movement which has emerged from affected communities. It is informative, daunting, inspiring and hopeful all at once. Mark Lichty from Pennsylvania in the USA is the film’s executive producer and will be in England on a nine day tour and will be present at the screenings.
The screening will be on Friday 4th November at the Bridgwater Arts Centre 11-13 Castle Street, Bridgwater,TA6 3DD. Doors open 6.30pm Start 7.00pm. Free Entry with donations to cover costs.
Mark has long been involved in issues of social justice and change through organizations such as Common Cause, Project for Nuclear Awareness and others. He is an attorney and a former CEO of Bustin Industrial Products. He used to believe gas was a solution to future energy needs and spent tens of thousands of dollars converting his plant to gas and had no issues with fracking at that time.
When he subsequently became involved with the research for the Groundswell Rising film, he changed his position completely. He now believes fracking is the major issue of our times and, due to the health and environmental consequences, is a moral issue as well.
Westover Councillor Brian Smedley said “This is a great opportunity to come and find out more about fracking and hear first hand from someone who has lived side by side with the industry and has documented people taking charge of defending their communities against its inherent dangers. There will also be a chance to find out about the situation in the UK as fracking licences have been issued in many areas including in North Somerset, incorporating Weston super Mare and extending right down and around the coast beyond Watchet, which put Bridgwater right in the epicentre.”
