The Men’s Shed is situated in Westover ward alongside the Canal just off the Old Taunton Road. It’s been up and running for several years but was largely mothballed during the covid years. Today they came bursting back onto the Bridgwater scene with an ‘Open Day’ to remind people exactly what they offer and how they can enrich the community in and around our town. Several Town Councillors dropped in to see them headed by Mayor Cllr Liz Leavy, and including Westover Councillors Kathy Pearce & Brian Smedley and Fairfax councillors Alex Glassford & Richard Morgan.
Men’s Sheds are not just for men, although the title may be the reason there’s not so many women involved. They’re for people with time on their hands and skills to share. Within the shed there are all the facilities for largely skilled craftspeople to pursue hobbies, practical interests , share their skills and learn new ones. The result is a great boost for community inspired projects who need that extra bit of craftwork thrown in by people who know what they’re doing and will do it for the love of their area whilst sharing the friendship of their fellow workers.
Crafts
Currently the focus is on woodworking, craft making, painting and wood turning and at the same time it’s a social space where members can have fun, have a chat, drink tea and enjoy good company.
The group -which was formed as SLaMS (Somerset Levels and Moors Shed)bis a charitibale incorporated organisation affiliated to the UK Mens Shed Association. They have no paid staff and its run on a day to day basis by volunteers.
