French Finally Win the Petanque!!

Les Français gagnent !

The French game of Petanque has a special relevance here in Bridgwater as it was invented in our French Twin Town of La Ciotat. For the past 2 years the Bridgwater Twinning groups have organised a Petanque themed get together on the grassy plains of Victoria Park, but first the Czechs won and then the Portuguese. This year however, it was finally time for the French to stake their claim to the sport they brought to the world. And Bridgwater. Pride in another Bridgwater First

The Pride flag flies from Bridgwater Town Hall

For the first time, actually, ever, the Pride flag flies from Bridgwater Town Hall. Following requests from the LGBTQ community to fly the flag the council unanimously agreed. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Questioning Month (LGBTQ Pride Month) is celebrated annually in June to honour the 1969 Stonewall riots and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for everyone lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning. The symbol of the movement is the Pride Flag -In the late 1970s, Harvey Milk – a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the first openly gay man elected to public office – asked his friend Gilbert Baker to design a symbol to represent (what was then referred to as) the gay community. There are many variants of the Pride flag today with extra colours and symbols to depict other elements, but the town council has chosen to fly the original.

IT’S THE GREAT BIG GREEN WEEK!

Town Deputy Leader & Climate emergency portfolio holder Cllr Kathy Pearce (Westover)

Saturday 10th June marks the start of the national Great Big Green Week.  This is a nationwide celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.  Bridgwater Town Council Climate Emergency portfolio Holder Kathy Pearce says “It’s a week to encourage us all to do something to make a difference – maybe go for a walk, install a water butt to save water or swap a meat-based meal for a plant based one instead?  Every little thing makes a difference. In Bridgwater, on Thursday we are joining forces with the Somerset Wildlife Trust with a guided Mindfulness and Nature walk around the Meads.  Join us to take some time out and appreciate the beauty of the Meads. The Meads has recently had a new path installed, which makes access for all much easier, so everyone is able to enjoy this little bit of the Levels in the heart of the town.  For the past couple of years, the Friends of the Meads have been working closely with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust to create a wetland meadow and spaces which everyone can enjoy. ” Click here for more information.
