Town anger as Tories Target Bridgwater for Higher Car Park Fees

Labour councillors were incensed at this weeks Meeting of Sedgemoor District Council as the controlling Tory group pushed through car park increases, but just for 2 Bridgwater car parks while the rest of the District charges were frozen. Proposals to raise fees by 25% in Dampiet street and Market street were voted through despite attempts by Bridgwater Labour members and some renegade Tories.

Town Development Forum Considers New Northgate Proposals

Bridgwater Town Council’s ‘Town Development Forum’ -a body of delegates from all walks of Bridgwater life, met this week with senior project managers from Sedgemoor District Council to consider the new plans for the controversial Northgate site, once the location of the popular Sedgemoor Splash, then threatened to be the home of a megalossal Tesco Store, both producing major confrontations, and now edging towards a popular new plan. The discussion is here for all to see and the recommendations will go to next Town Council on December 7th.

Waterways Group in Docks Accolade

Mayor Graham Granter congratulates IWA Chairman Bob Abbot on his groups award

The West Country Branch of the Inland Waterways Association has won this years ‘Branch Achievement’ award and today held an event at Bridgwater Docks to receive a trophy, honour their volunteers and promote their ongoing workload. Mayor of Bridgwater Graham Granter was there to thank them for their contribution to our town and other Town Councillors turned up to discuss mutual interests and taking their campaigns forward.

The IWA West Country Branch has worked with Bridgwater Town Council towards the long term aim of enhancing the navigation on the River Parrett and to regenerate the former docks and also on the Tidal Barrier Campaign. Snowflakes Christmas Lights Switch on set for 24th November

Bridgwater’s annual Christmas lights switch on is set for Friday 24th November. The switch on will be part of the annual ‘Snowflakes’ event which includes street food stalls from 12pm, entertainment from 4-8pm, squibbing at 7pm and the switch on itself scheduled for 6pm.

Shopping will be extended as usual into the evening. The event is organised by Bridgwater Town Council through its partnership working with the Bridgwater Town Team. Other sponsors of the event include Sedgemoor District Council, the Bridgwater mercury, Angel Place shopping centre, Sedgemoor fm, GPR, Timeless Images and Secret Valley.

Bridgwater Mural is Finished

The new Mural celebrating Bridgwater’s history and created by local artist Rachel Gundry with help from residents and even passers-by, has been unveiled for all to see. The artwork is located on the Broadway side of Blake Gardens and has been sponsored by Bridgwater Town Council and started during the Quayside Festival.

Town Council Leader Brian Smedley said “This is a welcome addition to the townscape and something that celebrates the town and it’s history. Of course it can be seen not just by walkers and cyclists it can be viewed by motorists as they pass by (or more likely queue) on the nearby Broadway. The mural was the initiative of local residents who asked for something that brightened up the old Wessex Water pumping station and ward councillors responded. We hope it will be appreciated and respected.”
